Internet/World Wide Web

The internet was first created for establishing a connection between two networks. Scientists wanted to be able to send packets of data from one place to another. The idea of the internet came from the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), a US Department of Defense project. The US Government was in the middle of the Cold War and wanted to develop a network that could outlast a nuclear strike, but scientists needed the network in order to share information with each other. The concept was called packet switching which would allow multiple nodes (computers) to communicate on one single network. The first message sent from one computer to another was in 1969 where a message was sent from UCLA to Stanford. Then in the 1970s  Vinton Cerf and Robert Khan developed Transmission Control and Internet Protocol which would help be able to control how data was being transmitted. This would replace the Network Control Protocol (NCP) developed by ARPANET. This then would lead to the development of the World Wide Web. Today people use the internet for just about anything. It is still used to send messages like in 1969, but that isn't the limit.

The World Wide Web (WWW) was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee developed WWW for the sake of connecting people and making files accessible to anyone who can access the internet. Then in 1992 the first browser, Mosaic, was developed in Illinois. This would make it easier for anyone to access the web. Congress also declared that the web could be used commercially which led to companies developing their own websites.

The difference between the web and the internet is that people use the internet to access the web. The internet is the connection on the computer whereas the web is what you use that connection for. This means that they aren't connected but they do work side by side. They are separate, but they can work together. The first website was a WWW information page developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991. It is still live and looks as it did in 1991.
